The Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adealide, South Australia
has developed a unique management
program to help autistic children, their parents and staff
cope with this distressful behaviour when they need an anaesthetic
for an operation.
Features of the program, published this week in the prestigious
international journal Paediatric Anaesthesia include:
* Admission to a special quiet room
just before theatre is scheduled. All admission details are processed
in advance to facilitate this.
* Giving a sedative orally in the
child’s favourite drink. This generally avoids having to restrain
the child in any way. Parents are often asked to drink an identical
but non-medicated drink.
* Avoidance of stress on waking by
routinely giving intravenous fluids to the sleeping child rather
than waiting to see if these are necessary after waking.
* Avoidance of the stress of possible
post operative vomiting by routinely giving anti-vomiting medication
to the sleeping child.
* Allowing the child to waken in
the parent’s presence and plan for early return to their familiar
home environment on the same day.
* When children are kept in hospital
overnight they are accommodated away from other patients in a
side room.
"Families with autistic children are significantly disadvantaged
if hospital staff do not understand their special needs which
is why our unique approach has been recognised as a major advance",
Dr van der Walt added.

Denise:
"I have 4 sons. They are 30 yrs, 24 yrs, 11 yrs, & 9 yrs old.
My two youngest were vaccine damaged and diagnosed with Aspergers
and PDDNOS respectively. Through G/C free diet and the yeast free
diet and many many supplements (including secretin for my 9 yr.
old) They are no longer considered Autistic.
My 9 yr. old still has high levels of heavy metal toxicity and our
next step is chelation therapy. I am writing to you because I think
your web site is WONDERFUL!!!!! I did years of research on my own
and only recently discovered your site!! I give this site to ALL
parents I know!!! Keep up the good work! These
biomedical interventions REALLY DO WORK!" Sincerely,
Denise
From all of us here, Thanks for your wonderful comment
Tax
Credit Bill
Monday, July 16, 2001
From CAN (Cure Autism Now)
To parents and friends of all developmentally disabled children:
Our tax credit bill was introduced in the Senate by Senator Torrecelli
(D-NJ) and in the House by Congressman English (R-21st PA) the last
week of June. The Senate bill is S.1122, and the House bill is HR.2339.
The bills ask for a refundable credit against tax with respect to
education and training of developmentally disabled children. The
Senate version asks for $3,000., and the House version for $2,000.
and the final figure will be worked out down the line.
Katharyn
Wright held the disabled close to her heart.
Mrs. Wright died last Saturday (May 19) in Seattle. She was
87. Her contributions - including her success in persuading state
legislators to pass Education for All, a bill that made Washington's
public schools responsible for educating all disabled children -
transformed medical care and educational and employment opportunities
for millions of people. The Washington law served as a model for
federal legislation.
Primary
care physicians have the opportunity, especially within the context
of the medical home, to be the first point of contact when parents
have concerns about their child's development or behavior.
The goal of this policy statement is to help the pediatrician
recognize the early symptoms of autism and participate in its diagnosis
and management. This statement and the accompanying technical report
will serve to familiarize the pediatrician with currently accepted
criteria defining the spectrum of autism, strategies used in making
a diagnosis, and conventional and alternative interventions
