and it's up to Sam to care for his new daughter, Lucy. Sam's neighbor
(Dianne Weist) helps with the daughter when poor Sam has to go

can to stay with her dad society begins to see what is happening
and Child Services steps in. Will Sam lose Lucy? Can Sam's "pro
bono" lawyer (Michelle Pfeiffer) save father and daughter from

Press
Release: The Dallas-based law firm of Waters & Kraus announced
today that it has received documents as a result of the discovery
process in the case of Counter v. Eli Lilly & Company, et al,
currently pending in Brazoria County, Texas that come from the
archives of Eli Lilly & Company. The documents clearly demonstrate
that Lilly’s thimerosal product, the mercury-based vaccine preservative
implicated in a number of recent law suits as causing neurological
injury to infants, was known as early as April 1930 to be dangerous.
Paradox
Lake is a film of such hypnotic grace and penetrating
insight that its effects will continue to be felt long after the
last image has faded from the screen. Profoundly unique in style
and substance, its organic nature defies categorization. Combining
elements of vérité with experimental video, it could only be created
by someone with extreme passion for, and extensive knowledge of,
its fascinating subjects. The film follows Matt Wolf, who flees
New York City to work upstate as a counselor at a camp for autistic
children. There he encounters a world he never knew existed--a
world in which people are trapped in their own minds, unable to
communicate their needs or feelings, living in perpetual prisons.
The story unfolds so subtly and with such authenticity that when
it ends, a flood of emotion is unleashed that has been kept back
by the fear of missing a single moment.

California
Reports: All time record 700
new cases of autism in less than 3 months.
According to a report just released from the California
Department of Developmental Services, California is now
adding one new child every three Hours with full-blown Level 1
DSM IV autism to the developmental services system. During the
88 day period from January 4, 2001 to April 3, 2001, 700 new children
were professionally diagnosed with DSM IV autism, a rate of 8
new children a day seven days a week, or one new child every three
hours. The 700 new children represents the largest quarterly increase
in the history of California's developmental services system,
and represents an increase of 107 more children than reported
in the previous record highest quarter.

Lee
Grossman elected President of the Autism Society of America.
Here is Lee's "victory speech"
Dear Friends:
The election results of the Autism Society of America (ASA) autism-society.org
were released today. I am happy and excited to report that I have
been elected President of the Society. My term officially will
begin after the Annual Meeting to be held in San Diego on July
21.
First of all, I would like to thank Michael Guarino for his continued
dedication to ASA. Few have the passion and the commitment that
Michael demonstrates towards this organization and the Autism
Community. It will be an honor to work beside him and the ASA
Foundation.
Second, we all must show our deep gratitude to Audrey Horne for
her leadership of ASA over the past 4 years. Her stewardship has
brought the Society forward and has established a foundation upon
which we are now "turning the corner" and moving towards a much
greater future.
And third, and most important, I wish to thank all of you for
the tremendous out pouring of support you have shown towards me
and what I hope to accomplish. We are on the verge of making our
Society a true leader in the Autism Community and bringing significant
benefit to the lives of all those affected by Autism. The Society
will be undergoing substantial change over the next few months
to recreates itself and build upon the successes of its past.
These changes will allow the Society to better respond to the
needs of our membership, make us proactive in policy and service
development and affirm itself as the true voice and resource of
the Autism Community.
Together we will make this happen for ourselves, our families
and our children.

A few years ago, autistic students, set apart by their struggle

eight classes are dedicated to children with the disorder, which
has been reported in record numbers of kids nationwide. In California,
it's the fastest growing segment in the state's developmental disability
system.

Helps Gain Senate Committee Support for Full Funding of IDEA.
In an exciting turn of events and an important first step, the U.S.
Senate Budget Committee has agreed to support full funding for the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This unexpected
news comes on the heels of repeated statements that full funding
for IDEA would not occur this year, and is thanks to the unrelenting
efforts of several key Senators, especially Senators Edward Kennedy
(D-MA) and Kent Conrad (D-ND).
"We are extremely grateful for the hard work and dedication of Senators
Kennedy and Conrad who made this happen," ASA President Lee Grossman
said. "We had been told repeatedly that full funding for IDEA was
a dead issue this year. Now, in part through the hard work of ASA's
Government Relations Committee, led by Chairman and 2nd Vice President
Jeff Sell, a strong commitment to fully fund IDEA has been forged
by the Senate Budget Committee."

A
Los Angeles police officer is being hailed as a hero after rescuing
a 10-year-old autistic girl from the path of an oncoming freight
train.
Los Angeles police Officer Thomas Case went to the 21600 block of
Devonshire Street around 8 p.m. Thursday night in response to a
report of someone walking in an oncoming train's path.
"He was the first to reach the individual,
and without due regard for the safety of his own life, lunged onto
the tracks and snatched 10-year-old Alex Diaz only seconds before
the train would have hit her,"
Officer Hayley Purece told news wires. "The actions of Officer Case
were truly heroic."

Harris, mom to son James Patrick, 7 with autism, will carry the
Olympic torch on Saturday in Ft. Lauderdale. Heather has been a
tireless autism fighter.
Harris’ friend Pam Few nominated her to carry the Olympic torch.
“This girl is constantly cheerful,” Few said. “She’s amazing. She
is the most thoughtful person I’ve ever met and the most giving
person I’ve ever met. She never dwells on the negative. I think
she’s a pillar of what the torchbearer should stand for.”
